Faiz I was in Austin, and you were not...

Faiz i missed you this week.
I was in austin
and you were not...
I met your daughters
I had dinner with them
I ate chicken tikka
and invoked your name.
We talked about school
we talked about life
Faiz I missed you this week
I was in austin
and you were not...

You would love our town,
its all grown up,
just like you'd wanted.
You would love your daughters,
they're all grown up,
just like you'd planned.
This town misses you
your daughters miss you
we were in austin
and you were not...

Google is happening here

Facebook is looking to hire you
they are in town
and you are not...

So many desi restaurants to choose from
all kinds of software to write
shopfulls of books that you'd read, and
a sky looking for the kites you'd fly.
Faiz all things missed you this week
we were in austin
and you were not...

With Ali I did yoga
with the Khataw's I shopped hats
we walked thru the volleyball court
and what's left of that Domain.
There we played years ago
and became friends for life.
Faiz we missed you on-court
we were in austin
and you were not...

Asma talked proudly to the kids
about working for you at MCC
MCC's still around and so's UT.
Yaseen and Aisha visited too.
With Yaseen you'd love to compete
Aisha you'd just love to meet
Faiz we all missed you this week
we were in austin
you were not...

We were young once
now we're slowing down
more thoughtful and less reflexive.
...a tad wiser and bit smarter
we'd prefer to think.
It would've been great to talk with you
about hyderabadi people
and bollywood movies

eat slabs of chocolate
idlis and sambar
talk of cricket and good books
about your passion for basketball and politics too
we could talk about life
and how far we've come
from your Maserati to the new Tesla.
My thoughts missed you this week
my conversation missed you this week
I was in austin
you were not...

I dont know when I return to your town
but God willing it will be soon.
I will come to austin, and
I know you will be there too!

  1. Mir, every word you mention makes me reflect back. I read this poem with tearful eyes ... Faiz you were once here and now you are not but I live with the memories each day!
God Bless Mir for writing such a beautiful reflection!
